Which iPhones Have LiDAR for 3D Scanning?
3D scanning apps like BeaverPlot rely on a LiDAR scanner — a depth sensor that measures the exact distance to everything around it. Not every iPhone has one, so before you count on scanning a room, it's worth knowing whether your device is equipped. Here's the simple version.
The quick rule
LiDAR lives on the "Pro" iPhones only. Every iPhone Pro and Pro Max from the iPhone 12 generation onward has it. The standard, Plus, mini, and SE models do not.
iPhones with LiDAR
- iPhone 12 Pro & 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 13 Pro & 13 Pro Max
- iPhone 14 Pro & 14 Pro Max
- iPhone 15 Pro & 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 16 Pro & 16 Pro Max
- …and later Pro models
iPads with LiDAR
- iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation, 2020) and later
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th generation, 2020) and later
Which models do NOT have LiDAR
If you have any of these, they can't run LiDAR-based 3D scanning:
- Standard iPhones (e.g. iPhone 14, 15, 16) and the Plus models
- iPhone mini models and every iPhone SE
- The standard iPad, iPad Air, and iPad mini
How to check your iPhone
Two easy ways:
- Look at the cameras: flip the phone over. Next to the camera lenses you'll see a small black circle — that's the LiDAR sensor. Pro models have it; standard models don't.
- Check the model name: Settings → General → About → Model Name. If it says "Pro" or "Pro Max" and it's an iPhone 12 or newer, you have LiDAR.
Why LiDAR matters for scanning
LiDAR is what lets a phone capture accurate room dimensions instead of guessing from photos. It's how BeaverPlot detects walls, doors, and windows as you walk a space and turns them into a real floor plan or BIM model. On a device without it, that level of accuracy simply isn't possible.
Bottom line: if it's an iPhone Pro (12 or later) or a 2020-or-newer iPad Pro, you're ready to scan.
